Info

Trimma helenae Winterbottom, Erdmann & Cahyani, 2014
Helen’s pygmy goby

Trimma helenae was discovered last summer by Dr. Mark Erdmann. This month, it was official described and named after Helen Newman, the lead biologist of the expedition that found this glowing jewel of a fish.

Solitary, often resting on sand or rubble bottoms of caves and ledges in 32 m.

Winterbottom, R., M.V. Erdmann and N.K. Dita Cahyani, 2014. Trimma helenae (Pisces; Gobioidei), a new species of gobiid fish from Indonesia. Zootaxa 3760(3):420-428. (Ref. 94948)

Classification: Biota > Animalia (Kingdom) > Chordata (Phylum) > Vertebrata (Subphylum) > Gnathostomata (Superclass) > Pisces (Superclass) > Actinopterygii (Class) > Perciformes (Order) > Gobiidae (Family) > Gobiinae (Subfamily) > Trimma (Genus)

Jumping guard
A jumping guard prevents (nocturnal) fish from jumping out.
Wrasses, blennies, hawkfishs and gobies jump out of an unprotected tank in fright if their night rest is disturbed, unfortunately these jumpers are found dried up in the morning on carpets, glass edges or later behind the tank.

A small night light also helps, as it provides the fish with a means of orientation in the dark!
