Very special thanks for the first photo of this beautiful cardinalfish to Dr. Gerry R. Allen and Dr. Mark Erdmann, Australia.

The photo of this diurnal cardinalfish was taken at Malaysia.

Cheilodipterus zonatus inhabits protected habitats, where conditions are similar to those of lagoons, a lso found on coastal reefs. The cardinalfish is usually seen solitary, occasionally in pairs.
It mimics the sabre-toothed blenny Meiacanthus vittatus.
The fish perfers depths of 2 to 25 meters.

Yellowbelly cardinalfish is also known from north-eastern Kalimantan, Indonesien.
