Indo-Pacific: Known from the Society Islands, Hawaiiian Islands, Palau, Solomon Islands, Great Barrier Reef, Ryukyu Islands, Gulf of Thailand, Indonesia, Chagos Archipelago, Maldive Islands, and Oman.
Reported as a first record for the Red Sea from an underwater photograph taken by Sven Kahlbrock off Hurghada, Egypt. Maldives and Chagos Archipelago to the Hawaiiian Islands.
Inhabit deep slopes, subject to strong currents, with isolated outcrops of black corals.
Benthic.
ound in small groups. Eggs are laid on a branch section after removing the polyps and guarded by the male.
Associated with antipatharian corals at depths below 15 m.
Dart out to feed on small animals of the plankton .

Jumping guard
A jumping guard prevents (nocturnal) fish from jumping out.
Wrasses, blennies, hawkfishs and gobies jump out of an unprotected tank in fright if their night rest is disturbed, unfortunately these jumpers are found dried up in the morning on carpets, glass edges or later behind the tank.

A small night light also helps, as it provides the fish with a means of orientation in the dark!
