Fowleria marmorata is a resident of clear coastal waters and seaward facing reefs with algae covered slopes and mixed gravel bottoms.
Mostly invisible during the day, the small perch is a low-profile, retiring and hiding species that emerges from daytime hiding places only at nightfall to go hunting .
Particularly conspicuous in the nocturnal species is a large, bright ,ear-shaped operculum spot with a thin yellow stripe.
The middle fins mostly red and fading at the edges.
Color: The color of the body is pinkish-gray with many brown stripes.
