Info

Valenciennes, 1840

Xyrichtys martinicensis, also known as "the rosy razor fish ', is found mostly in open, sandy areas and seagrass meadows of south Florida and the Bahamas to the coasts of South America along the coast of Central America.

Females are often light green-gray, with a slightly pink glow anterior and diffuse light-orange to bright red stripes beginning behind the eye to the anterior pectoral fin. Adult Males lack these colored bands mostly.

Xyrichtys martinicensis lives by small invertebrates. At risk they "dive" upside down in the sand.

Synonyms:
Hemipteronotus martinicensis (Valenciennes, 1840)
Hemipteronotus modestus (Poey, 1867)
Xyrichthys infirmus Bean, 1891
Xyrichthys lineatus Valenciennes, 1840
Xyrichthys martinicensis Valenciennes, 1840
Xyrichthys modestus Poey, 1867
Xyrichthys venustus Poey, 1876

Jumping guard
A jumping guard prevents (nocturnal) fish from jumping out.
Wrasses, blennies, hawkfishs and gobies jump out of an unprotected tank in fright if their night rest is disturbed, unfortunately these jumpers are found dried up in the morning on carpets, glass edges or later behind the tank.

A small night light also helps, as it provides the fish with a means of orientation in the dark!
