Info

Callogorgia delta is an azooxanthellate deep-sea horn coral endemic to the Gulf of Mexico (Western Atlantic).

Recent studies on coral-associated bacteria of the classes Mycoplasma and Mollicutes, which were first detected in the horn coral Callogorgia delta, are interesting.
The bacteria were not present in the water and were absent or rare in the sediment, but were detected in large numbers in the coral.
This community appears to be important for the health of the coral.

The gorgonian was first described as Callogorgia americana delta Cairns & Bayer, 2002, the paper by Cairns & Bayer
"Studies on western Atlantic Octocorallia (Coelenterata: Anthozoa). Part 2: The genus Callogorgia Gray, 1858" on page 853 states that there was a unique, unusual and highly divergent report of the coral found in 58 meters off Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico.

Etymology: The species name "delta" was used because of the alluvial deposit at the mouth of a river, alluding to the delta of the Mississippi where species were collected.

Synonym: Callogorgia americana delta Cairns & Bayer, 2002
