Info
Whiting are members of the cod family.
Sillago burrus inhabits nearshore muddy and silty areas and can grow up to 36 cm long.
The body of the small cod is silvery with irregular dark spots on the sides that can look like sloping bars.
The upper spots are small, and an indistinct black spot can be seen at the base of the pectoral fin.
The colloquial name "trumpeter" whiting refers to the grunting sounds the cod makes when approached and touched.
Whiting and cod are suitable for very large public aquariums, e.g. Hagenbeck / Hamburg or Greena / Denmark.
Both species are popular food and sport fishing fish.
