The Sponge cardinalfish occurs in coral reefs and rocky bottoms in a depth range of 5 - 60 meters, usually 5 - 20 meters, frequently inhabiting cylindrical sponges like Verongia fistularis, Callyspongia plicifera, and Callyspongia vaginalis.
