Linnaeus, 1758)
Desmophyllum pertusum is a stony coral that does not feed on zooxanthellae like its tropical relatives, but exclusively by catching plankton.
This species became known from a 35-kilometer-long cold-water coral reef southwest of the Lofoten island chain.
A larger reef was recently discovered by chance off the coast of Greenland.
This type of stony coral seems to occur all over the world, and depending on the prevailing temperature, the coral settles at corresponding depths:
Around the equator, the coral has been found at around 1000 meters, off the Lofoten Islands at around 35 - 40 meters.
Synonyms:
Dendrosmilia nomlandi Durham & Barnard, 1952
Lophelia californica Durham, 1947
Lophelia prolifera (Pallas, 1766)
Lophohelia affinis Pourtalès, 1868
Lophelia pertusa (Linnaeus, 1758)
Lophohelia prolifera (Pallas, 1766)
Lophohelia prolifera f. brachycephala Moseley, 1881
Lophohelia prolifera f. gracilis Duncan, 1873
Lophohelia subcostata Milne Edwards & Haime, 1850
Lophohelia tubulosa Studer, 1878
Madrepora pertusa Linnaeus, 1758
Madrepora prolifera Pallas, 1766
