Info

Zebrias zebra (Bloch, 1787)

Zebrias are a purely marine and benthic species found in saltwater and brackish water environments. They often live near shore in shallow waters ranging from 5 to 40 meters deep. In the water, they are most commonly found in sandy areas or near seagrass where they can best blend into their environment. They can be found in tropical environments where they are native to the coastal waters of the Indo-Pacific and South Australia.

Zebrias reproduce by external fertilization, where the sperm fertilizes an egg outside the organism. Zebrias begin life as bilaterally symmetrical larvae that swim upright with an eye on either side of the head. As they transition into juveniles, they transform asymmetrically, giving rise to a dorsoventrally flattened adult.

Zebrias zebra inhabits shallow sandy and muddy bottoms of coastal waters. Feeds primarily on benthic invertebrates, especially small crustaceans. Marketed fresh, frozen, and dried-salted.
