Fromia hadracantha is a typical colorful starfish of the genus Fromia, about which there is unfortunately almost nothing worth reporting.
A link to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History indicates that a specimen was discovered on June 23, 1952, in Micronesia “under and on coral heads and between the branches of Porites compressa.”
The photo from Raja Ampat, Indonesia, kindly provided by Craig J. Howe, appears to be one of the very few photos available of this starfish.
It shows that the starfish was photographed on a rocky bottom.
The first description from 1921 was based on a dried starfish with the following color description: “deep matt violet above and below.”
The starfish was also in an unlabeled bag, so the location where it was found was also missing....
