Info

The live sponge is massive, with rounded cones covering the surface, its color ranging from reddish-orange to mauve-red to dull white.
Specimens from deeper water may lack pigmentation entirely, being a beige-brown.

The growth form is characteristic and relatively uniform, but the surface may or may not have small finger-like projections emanating from free branches. Where present, surface projections range from tapering finger-like to spiky outgrowths.

The pores are usually flush with the surface or only slightly raised above it, with a distinct skin lip. The oscula are scattered between the surface tubercles, not confined to a specific area, and range in diameter from 0.4 to 2.2 mm.

The surface is moderately dense to very dense, decorated with tiny grooves and stripes and irregularly scattered microcones
The entire surface is irregularly folded due to the tubular habitus and cave-like structure.

Structure: Soft, compressible, but not easily torn.

The Hydroroid Zyzzyzus warreni Calder, 1988 sometimes grows on the sponge.
