Info
Pseudothyone labradorensis was discovered in the cold waters of the Labrador Sea in 2020 while working with a rock dredge on a substrate consisting mainly of mud with sparse rocks, with the help of a drop camera.
With a “maximum size of 1.4 cm, Pseudothyone labradorensis is not one of the usual normal-sized sea cucumbers.
Pseudothyone labradorensis has a curved, cylindrical body that tapers at the front and rear ends.
The body color of living animals is pink, the small roller has 10 tentacles.
Pseudothyone labradorensis can be distinguished from other species by a combination of the following characteristics:
pink-colored body; tube feet arranged in double rows at the pointed posterior end;
body wall ossicles only perforated plates with smooth perforation margins;
Tubular foot ossicles rods and end plate of irregular shape.
Etymology: The species is named after its type locality, the Labardor Sea.
Other animals collected included soft corals Duva florida (Rathke, 1806), sea pens (Pennatuloidea), fragments of the gorgonians Primnoa resedaeformis (Gunnerus, 1763), Paragorgia arborea (Linnaeus, 1758), Acanella arbuscula (Johnson, 1862) and the mushroom coral Anthomastus Verrill, 1878.
Sponges, mussels and a small grenadier fish were also present, indicating the diverse requirements of the seabed.
The images of the seabed confirm the dominance of soft sediments in the study area, which contain very little gravel and rock.
