Info

Paguristes frontalis (H. Milne Edwards, 1836)

Paguristes frontalis is a large, moderately widespread hermit crab from the Diogenidae family. It lives in the waters from South Australia to Western Australia and can be found there at depths of up to about 8 meters.

Paguristes frontalis differs from other hermit crabs in its area of occurrence in its size, lack of hair, enlarged left claw and tubercles of different sizes on the fingers of the right claw. Specimens that live in southeastern Australia are bright orange-red, while those in the southwest are more purple-brown.

Paguristes frontalis is primarily a scavenger, but is also able to hunt crustaceans and other live prey.
