Monomia haani (Stimpson, 1858)
A crab from the Portunitade family - the swimming crabs. Members of the family are characterized by the fifth pair of legs being flattened into wide paddles used for swimming. This ability, along with their strong, sharp claws, allows many species to be fast and aggressive predatory crabs.
Monomia haanii is widespread in the Indo-Pacific and is commonly found in the southern East China Sea and South China Sea. There, the swimming crab inhabits sandy and rocky bottoms at depths of 10–100 m. It feeds on zoobenthos and fish.
The red swimming crab Monomia haanii is an important export fishery in China and Vietnam, generated millions in trade revenue. For such a commercially important crab species, little attention has been paid to the sustainable use of stocks.
There is a possibility of confusion with Monomia gladiator.
The swimming crab is host to the endoparasite Cancrion khanhensis Oanh & Boyko, 2020.
