Captive breeding / propagation

The offspring of Leptogorgia cardinalis are possible. Unfortunately, the number of offspring is not large enough to cover the demand of the trade. If you are interested in Leptogorgia cardinalis, please ask your dealer for offspring. If you already own Leptogorgia cardinalis, try breeding yourself. This will help to improve the availability of offspring in the trade and to conserve natural stocks.

Info

The specimen shown from Florida is the only evidence of the occurrence of this species in the South Atlantic Bight; whether the coral is more strongly represented in the Gulf of Mexico has not been investigated.

The color of the colony is bright red or orange.

Similar species: Leptogorgia punicea (Milne Edwards & Haime, 1857)

Synonym: Lophogorgia cardinalis Bayer, 1961

Our very special and heartfelt thanks for the permission to use all color photos from the article "Identification guide to the shallow water (0-200 m) octocorals of the South Atlantic Bight" goes to the two authors Drs. Steve Morton & Susan DeVictor, USA.
