Latissistrombus taurus (Reeve, 1857)
Latissistrombus taurus is a shell snail from the Strombidae family, which are called pteropods due to their special shell shape. Their housings have finger-shaped projections or an elongated siphon channel. The horny operculum is long and curved. It serves as an aid in locomotion and resembles a lunge used by epee fencers. This is what the second colloquial term refers to as fencer snails.
They also have a typical Strombus notch through which these snails stick their left eye stalk. Wing snails or snails are found in tropical seas, mostly in shallow water. They feed on herbivores.
Latissistrombus taurus is known as the bull conch. It is best known from the Marshall Islands and the Mariana Islands. In the Marshall Islands, the distribution is very uneven. They usually come in pairs, sometimes in small and rarely in larger groups. The bull snail lives on sandy and scree soils.
The shells are often heavily encrusted and inhabited by hoof snails and worm snails.
