Info

Hinea punctostriata (E. A. Smith, 1872)

Hinea punctostriata is a species belonging to the family Planaxidae, colloquially known as flat spindle snails. Members of the family have thick-walled, cone-shaped shells with spiral ribs or are smooth. The siphon channel is clearly pronounced. Flat spindle snails have a thin, horny operculum to close the shell opening. It is mainly found on rocks in the intertidal zone.

The genus Hinea currently contains only 10 scientifically described species. Hinea punctostriata occurs in the European part of the Atlantic Ocean, in the Mediterranean and in the Red Sea. The species name "punctostriata" refers to the pattern, which consists of dots and dashes.
