The sponge has a highly ornamented surface consisting of variously shaped plates and worm-like grooves.
The few visible oscula all have an orange membrane.
Similar species:
Myrmekioderma gyroderma and Myrmekioderma rea are externally very similar to Didiscus oxeatus; distinguishing their microscleres allows them to be distinguished.
