Leider ist über die Biologie des Gervais-Schnabelwals so gut wie nichts bekannt, was zum Teil daran liegt, dass nur eine Handvoll Exemplare in freier Wildbahn identifiziert wurden.
Der Schnabekwal ist im Atlantik beheimatet, wo er in tiefen Gewässern an der Schelfkante und darüber hinaus in tropischen und warm-gemäßigten Gewässern lebt.

Speiseplan:
Neben Tiefsee-Kopffüßern stehen verschiedenen Tierseefische wie Laternenfische (Lampadena) und Vipernfische (Chauliodus)) auf dem Speiseplan des Wals.
Vereinzelt wurden Krebstiere wie Garnelen der Gattung Gnathophausia im Magen eines toten Wals gefunden.
