Info

Yap Trench is a deep-sea channel up to 8850 m deep and 560 km long in the western Pacific Ocean

Paraphelliactis yapensis is a sea anemone that resembles the carnivorous plant Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula) of the sundew family, when a fly touches the Venus flytrap's trigger bristles, the trap snaps shut.
The prey catch of Paraphelliactis tangi works on the same principle.

The deep-sea anemone was found in a deep-sea channel, the Yap Trench, which forms a deep-sea channel up to 8850 m deep and 560 km long in the western Pacific Ocean
The holotype had attached to sponge needles, and was collected on December 15, 2014.

Paratypes of the anemone were attached to sponges;

Habitats: Foraminifera mud in association with and also without manganese nodules.

The deep-water sea anemone was discovered and collected using the FX-Dive 16 (Discovery) ROUV submersible.
