Info

The pine conefish family (Monocentridae) consists of five species in two genera:

Genus Monocentris with the following species:
- Monocentris japonica (Houttuyn, 1782).
- Monocentris neozelanicus (Powell, 1938)
- Monocentris reedi Schultz, 1956

Genus Cleidopus with the following species:
- Cleidopus gloriamaris De Vis, 1882.

In 2022, based on 106 animals from waters from Taiwan, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, and Queensland, Australie, a new pine cone or pineapplefish was described.

Monocentris chrysadamas is sympatric with and similar to Monocentris japonica, but differs from the latter in, among other things, having only 6 or 7 scales on the third scale row below the lateral line

About the biology of the species not currently nothing known.

Etymology.
The species name "chrysadamas", is a combination of the Greek words "chrys" and "adamas", meaning "golden" and "diamonds", in reference to the yellowish body color when alive and the diamond-shaped body scales.
Moreover, the meaning of these two words in Chinese also refers to a famous agricultural pineapple variety in Taiwan, which this new pineapple fish resembles.
