Captive breeding / propagation

The offspring of Sclerophytum digitatum are possible. Unfortunately, the number of offspring is not large enough to cover the demand of the trade. If you are interested in Sclerophytum digitatum, please ask your dealer for offspring. If you already own Sclerophytum digitatum, try breeding yourself. This will help to improve the availability of offspring in the trade and to conserve natural stocks.

Info

Since its first description in 2008, the soft coral was considered an endemic species known only from the waters around Palau.

Extracts from soft corals are very interesting in the field of research, including the medical field, so in 2019 chemical ingredients of the soft coral Sclerophytum digitatum were extracted from Vietnam.
Since then, the coral from Palau and Vietnam has been known.

Some deep-sea corals are now better studied than corals that can be accessed in relatively shallow waters by research divers, so seemingly simple basic information, such as the size of the living soft coral, is lacking.
Due to the very small distribution to date, husbandry information on Sclerophytum digitatum is probably lacking, we are curious if there will be any comments on the soft coral.

A propagation by offshoots should be possible analogous to other Sinularia species.

Etymology: The Latin word "digitatum", finger, refers to the finger-like lobes of this species.

Synonym: Sinularia digitata van Ofwegen, 2008 · unaccepted > superseded combination (original combination)
