The upper side of the taxperch's body is dark gray to gray, and its underside is lighter in color, with indistinct, narrow, short stripes sometimes visible along the flanks.

A dark spot is visible over the upper corner of the operculum.
Dorsal, caudal, and anal fins are gray with dark outer margins; the upper and lower edges of the caudal fin are narrow white.
Juvenile taxa are blue on the top of the body and silvery on the belly.
