Umbellula encrinus is a beautiful sea feather that occurs at great depths.
Studies have shown that there is a strong and probably mutualistic relationship between the ophiuroid Asteronyx loveni and the sea feather Funiculina quadrangularis.

The sea feather and the sea cucumber (Cucumaria frondosa) are negatively affected in the shallow southern areas, especially by trawling.
