Info

Vanderhorstia steelei was first observed in Cook Bay, Moorea, Society Islands, French Polynesia, over muddy sandy bottoms at a depth of 5 meters.
We are not aware of any other water depth data.

The goby lives together with the partner shrimp Alpheus rapacida.

In the area of the head orange and golden spots can be seen, especially striking and pretty are the vertically running golden-yellow body stripes.
Our thanks for photo use go to Mark. A Stelle.

This species is named in honor of Prof. Dr. Mark A. Steele of California State University, Northridge, California, who took the photo of Fig. 3 on page 38 of the first description, and called attention to the species' location in Moorea

Jumping guard
A jumping guard prevents (nocturnal) fish from jumping out.
Wrasses, blennies, hawkfishs and gobies jump out of an unprotected tank in fright if their night rest is disturbed, unfortunately these jumpers are found dried up in the morning on carpets, glass edges or later behind the tank.

A small night light also helps, as it provides the fish with a means of orientation in the dark!
