The body of Morwong ephippium is reddish-brown to brown overall with irregular spots, a broad, pale diagonal bar runs from the nape to behind the base of the pectoral fins and onto the pale belly, a second shorter bar from below the dorsal fin spines to just below the middle of the body.
A series of pale spots or a broad stripe can be seen along the base of the dorsal fin.

Fingerfins are not suitable for community tanks due to their extremely large diet, almost all edible benthic creatures are devoured.
