Info

Polyorchis penicillatus (Eschscholtz, 1829)

Polyorchis penicillatus has a bell that is at least as high as it is wide, with approx.100 unbranched tentacles. When the animal is actively swimming the tentacles may be contracted to very short or extended to twice the bell length, especially when the animal is drifting. This hydromedusa can be found coastal nearshore in bays among eelgrass.

This large Penicillate Jellyfish is common in some years and nearly absent in others.

Similar to Ptychogena lactea, Staurophora mertensi,Polyorchis haplus and Scrippsia pacifica .
